CARING KIDS
In the beginning of January, fifth grade members of Caring Kids spent a day volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House in Albany. They started with a tour of the building and learned about the amazing things that happen there. They even met a family with a sick baby who made the Ronald McDonald House their temporary home. Students took down 13 Christmas trees and many other Christmas decorations. They also sorted can tabs, something that Caring Kids actually collects and donates to them! There is a canister in the front hall of Ellis if anyone would like to donate can tabs.

DECA is a high school student organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs through hands-on experiences in business, marketing, finance, and hospitality. Students develop real-world skills such as leadership, teamwork, and career readiness while connecting classroom learning to practical applications and community involvement. Additionally, students can compete academically against other schools at the local, state, and national levels. Our newly established DECA club has over 20 members, with 12 of them actively participating in role-playing scenarios and competitive events. On Friday, January 9th, this team set out to compete against over 160 other DECA members from surrounding districts such as Shenendehowa, Shaker, Niskayuna, Albany Academy, and more.
With hard work and perseverance, over half of the competing group finished top 5 in their respective competitive events. Greenville had two first-place winners and a 2nd-place winner qualify for this year's DECA state convention, which is being held in early March in Rochester. Congratulations to Nicole Chase (Senior), Alannah MacDonald-Katz (Junior), and Isabella Acker (Freshmen) for qualifying for the state conference. Best of luck! DONATIONS FOR ANIMAL SHELTER Do you have any gently used blankets, towels, or washcloths of any size that you'd like to get rid of? Hailey Schmid, a GHS Senior and Interact Club Member, is spearheading a community service project collecting these items for the Columbia Greene Humane Society Shelter. The shelter is currently at capacity and is in need of resources. If you are doing some post-holiday cleaning- this is an excellent way to repurpose items for a good cause! Hailey is accepting donations through January 23. Donations can be dropped off in the box located in the stairwell of HS Room 249 or in Mr. Gipprich's room.
If you have any other donations for the Shelter, like food or toys, Hailey is happy to deliver those as well! Questions? Contact Hailey at schmidh@greenvillecsd.org or Audrey Hynes at hynesa@greenvillecsd.org.

CUT PAPER ART
The Advanced Studio Art students created a composition made from images that they found intriguing and collected. The students looked at Surrealist artists' work for inspiration and for ideas on how to put images together that don't make sense.
Surrealist artists were interested in the mind and the dream world. The art was usually painted with so much detail that it could be a photo. The subject matter did not seem to go together and usually had hidden messages. The class looked at the work of Max Ernst, Man Ray, Salvador Dali, Dorothea Tanning, René Magritte, and Kay Sage.
Once their collages were made, they needed to figure out how to take full color and value images and make them into only black and white. This is no easy task! The class used Photoshop to help simplify the image, then the students spent time problem-solving and mapping out their composition.
After carefully planning, the intricate cutting began, and all students were dedicated, which led to the creation of this amazing work.
See more of Ms. DellaRocco's students' work on her webpage and Instagram. |
